Watch the Perseid meteor shower over Bulgaria tonight!

Between 12 and 13 August, the skies over Bulgaria will put on one of the most spectacular natural displays: the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Dozens of “shooting stars” per hour are expected to light up the darkness — an ideal moment for fans of astro-tourism, the Ministry of Tourism reminds us. Bulgaria is among the most attractive destinations in Europe for this kind of experience.

One of the best places to watch the celestial show is the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory, located in the Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of over 1,700 metres — the largest astronomical complex in the Balkans. The Eastern Rhodope region around Madzharovo and Krumovgrad also offers excellent viewing conditions, with an exceptionally dark night sky that makes the Milky Way stand out like a glowing cloud.

For those who prefer to stay closer to civilisation, the Shumen Plateau is a good alternative. In Strandzha and Sakar, the sky is among the darkest in the country and far from mass tourism. Belogradchik and its famous rocks not only boast a crystal-clear night sky, but also a unique landscape that makes astrophotography even more exciting.

In the southwest, Melnik and the Pirin Mountains have a dry climate with clear nights. In the east, Shabla and Durankulak, which are far from the lights of mass resorts, also offer excellent opportunities to observe the night sky against a sea horizon.
