Bulgarians travel most often to neighbouring countries

The number of trips abroad by Bulgarian citizens in July 2025 increased by 16.8% compared to July 2024. According to NSI data, the most trips were to: Greece - 261.7 thousand, Turkey - 253.2 thousand, Romania - 91.7 thousand, Germany - 56.7 thousand, Serbia - 54.3 thousand, Italy - 38.4 thousand, France - 34.8 thousand, Republic of North Macedonia - 33.2 thousand, Spain - 31.5 thousand, Austria - 28.8 thousand,

Travel for leisure and excursions predominated - 49.0%, followed by travel for other purposes - 35.4%, and for business purposes - 15.6%.

Visits by foreign citizens to Bulgaria have also increased, with 5.6% more in July 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year. The increase in trips is for all observed purposes, with transit through Bulgaria accounting for 36.5% of all visits by foreign citizens to Bulgaria.

The share of citizens from the European Union who visited Bulgaria is 54.6% of the total number of foreign citizens, with the largest number being Romanians - 28.1%, Germans - 16.7%, Poles - 9.6%, and Greeks - 8.6%.

The share of visits for the purpose of recreation and excursion prevails - 51.7%, followed by visits for other purposes - 42.6%, and for business purposes - 5.7%.
