Tonight is Bat Night. It will take place from 5 PM tonight, 30 August, in front of the lily pond on the main walkway in Borisova Garden in Sofia, BNR’s Radio Sofia reports.

The information campaign Bat Night has been organized every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries around the world, and always on the last weekend of August. The event is organized in Bulgaria by Bat World Bulgaria, part of the international initiative EUROBATS which aims to popularize knowledge about bats and how important they are to nature and humans.

Visitors will be able to learn lots of interesting things about bats, and children can look forward to a workshop, and fun and games. Bats are often misunderstood, and there is a lot of prejudice but they actually play an indispensable role in the ecosystems, says Vyara Krushkova from Bat World Bulgaria. They regulate the number of insects. including agricultural pests, helping attain a balance in nature. They are also an indicator whether the environment is clean – when their habitats have been preserved, that means the ecosystems are healthy.
