A Month of Bulgarian Culture in Berlin

The Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin has unveiled an ambitious and diverse programme for September, promising celebrations of art, film and literature.

The month begins with a visual arts exhibition: Cultural Nomads, curated by Irina Batkova, opens on 12 September at 7pm. Bringing together the work of 20 contemporary women artists from Bulgaria, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Japan and Iceland who are currently living and working in Germany, it offers a striking exploration of mobility and identity.

Cinema enthusiasts are equally well catered for. From 15–17 September, the Brotfabrik cinema will screen Eternity Package, a dark comedy directed by Magdalena Ilieva which has received international awards. Later in the month, from 25 September to 1 October, Milko Lazarov’s drama Tarika — Bulgaria’s official Oscar submission — will take centre stage.

On 18 September, the programme welcomes celebrated Bulgarian author Georgi Gospodinov, who will appear at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as part of the 21st International Literature Festival in Berlin. He will discuss his most personal work, The Gardener and Death, in Bulgarian with simultaneous German translation.

Finally, to mark the European Day of Languages, the Institute once again turns to its youngest audiences. On 25 and 26 September, two Berlin libraries will host fun Bulgarian language workshops for children led by Militsa Todorova.

Entry to all events is free, except for film screenings.
