Plovdiv shines squeaky clean and rose-scented

In keeping with tradition, city sanitation teams gave the Unification Monument in Plovdiv’s Unification Square a thorough cleaning ahead of the official 140th-anniversary celebrations of the national holiday. On 6 September, Bulgarians will mark the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.

Desislava Georgieva, director of the municipal enterprise, told BTA that the work required two tons of water and 15 litres of Bulgarian rose-scented shampoo.

During the week, employees of the municipal enterprise 'Gardens and Parks' tended to the green spaces in Union Square. Hundreds of Iresine, Coleus and Salvia flowers were planted in front of the Archaeological Museum. The landscapers complemented the arrangement with crape myrtle bushes. Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia) is renowned for its stunning blooms and extended flowering period.

In preparation for the upcoming holiday, all of the city's entry and exit routes and bus stops on the main boulevards and key thoroughfares were thoroughly cleaned, too.

Plovdiv will celebrate Unification Day, which coincides with the city's holiday, with almost 400 new flags.
