Migrant pressure on Bulgaria’s border with Turkey has fallen more than tenfold in the past two years, the Director of the Border Police, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov said on Thursday. Chief Commissioner Zlatanov, together with Prime Minister Zhelyazkov and Interior Minister Mitov, attended the inauguration of a newly built nearly 5-km stretch of sensor line with 101 video cameras near the village of Krainovo, along the border with Тurkiye, BTA reported.

Anton Zlatanov praised border police for preventing “chaos from illegal migration” and cited official figures: 1,210 attempted crossings blocked on Sept. 5, 2023; 260 last year; and 33 today.

“Although the pressure is not zero, it has been reduced more than ten times. It is under control, but it is not over. That is why we must continue at this pace,” Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said, according to the Interior Ministry press service.
