Today is the second day of the visit of NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska to Bulgaria At a meeting with Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov yesterday, she emphasized that Bulgaria is among the allies that, with their consistent actions, strengthen the unity of the Alliance.

"Your country has an exceptional potential for the development of the defense industry, and the latest initiatives related to the SAFE mechanism, as well as the recently announced contract with Rheinmetall, are an indicative example in this direction," she emphasized. Zhelyazkov pointed out that Bulgaria's defense spending already exceeds 2% of GDP and there is a political consensus in the country to increase it to 5% of GDP by 2035.

At a meeting between Shekerinska and Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov, the security situation in the Black Sea region and the Western Balkans, the challenges related to the war in Ukraine and other current topics were discussed.

We recall that over the past ten days, the capabilities of the Bulgarian army and our military enterprises were reviewed by the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen, Antonio Costa, as well as Shekerinska.
