Government plans to open primary care clinics in small towns

Silvi Kirilov

The government plans to open primary healthcare clinics in small towns and provide incentives to encourage healthcare professionals to work in underpopulated areas.

This is part of the government-approved National Health Strategy, which aims to improve access to primary outpatient care and achieve a balanced territorial distribution of medical assistance and healthcare in Bulgaria by 2027. The strategy will provide incentives for young people to pursue a career in healthcare, create conditions that encourage people to work in small towns and support general practitioners in remote areas.

'New primary and healthcare clinics will be opened so that people in small towns do not have to travel tens of kilometres to see a doctor,' said Health Minister Silvi Kirilov.

A unified information system will also be introduced to monitor the number, qualifications and territorial distribution of medical personnel in real time.
