On September 21, we observe World Alzheimer's Day. This day has been marked annually since 1994 at the initiative of the Alzheimer's International Organization. The goal is to encourage efforts for earlier detection of the disease and the provision of integrated health and social care for affected patients, to inform the public about the symptoms, risk factors and support options for both affected individuals and their loved ones.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia - a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to impaired memory, thinking and behavior. The disease affects millions of people around the world and in Bulgaria. Worldwide, approximately 10 million people suffered from Alzheimer's disease as of 2021, with the number expected to increase to over 19 million by 2036. This is mainly due to the aging population. Women are more affected than men.

In Bulgaria, by 2025, according to a study by the Alzheimer Bulgaria organization, about 0.2% of respondents reported having dementia (including Alzheimer's), and 14.4% had a close relative with similar symptoms or diagnosis. This means that about 140,000 people in Bulgaria suffer from dementia. The majority of those affected are over 60 years old, many of whom receive care at home, and there are significant gaps in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

This day is an opportunity to remember that people living with Alzheimer's need love, patience and understanding. Let us help them maintain their dignity and quality of life as much as possible.
