Underwater excavations near Cape Kilik in Bulgaria’s Avren municipality have revealed evidence of a harbour dating back to the early 1st millennium BC.

The September 17–23 expedition, led by Prof. Ivan Hristov with divers from the National History Museum, National Protection Service staff and volunteers, explored a little-studied bay south of the cape.

Researchers registered 348 ceramic fragments and amphorae from Heraclea, Chios, Kos, Rome and North Africa. Among the earliest finds were three stone anchors with a single hole, dated to the start of the 1st millennium BC.

Archaeologists conclude the area functioned as a loading and unloading site from early antiquity until the 7th century, serving the ancient settlement of Erite.
