A military ceremony in memory of the heroes of Kaymakchalan was held on the mountain peak of the same name, located on the border between North Macedonia and Greece, the Ministry of Defense reported. This year marks 109 years since the Battle of Kaymakchalan, part of the Macedonian Front during World War 1.
The ceremony was attended by Bulgarian military personnel led by Major General Deyan Deshkov, as well as representatives from the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Greece. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Defense, and the Commander of the Land Forces. A memorial prayer was also held in honour of the fallen soldiers. Major General Deyan Deshkov recalled that for a month and a half, Bulgarian troops fought intense battles in this part of the front, with particularly heavy fighting taking place between September 12 and 30, 1916. The battles took place at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Nearly 2,000 soldiers from the 11th Sliven Regiment were killed and over 6,000 were wounded.
