An intact grave of a young woman dating to the beginning of the 2nd century AD has been discovered by archaeologists near the village of Kapitan Petko Voivoda, Topolovgrad Municipality announced. The team that made the discovery is led by Daniela Agre and Deyan Dichev.

According to the archaeologists, the burial was carried out according to the cremation ritual and the body was laid on a special wooden bed in a brick burial chamber, covered with a brick vault. Massive gold earrings, hemispherical gold applications in the head area, a gold brooch are among the discovered finds.

The brooch - with a relief female image, is distinguished by its exceptional elegance and is without analogue in Bulgaria. Similar jewelry is known from the Creperia Tryphena burial in Rome, which speaks of the high social status of the buried woman, Topolovgrad Municipality informed.

Other artifacts include a bronze table with legs in the shape of mythical sirens – an extremely rare find for the territory of the Roman Empire, a toilet chest, glass and ceramic vessels, a bone hurka and leather shoes. A bronze coin of Emperor Trajan (98–117 AD) was also found in the head area.

Last summer, in the area of the village of Kapitan Petko Voivoda, during the excavation of the grave of a Thracian horseman from the troops of the Roman Empire, a gold treasure was discovered, and in early August this year – a second grave of a warrior aristocrat along with gifts, part of his armament and his riding horse from the second half of the 2nd century, BTA recalls.
