Bulgaria’s Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev conferred in Brussels with the European Commission team responsible for the Resilience and Recovery Plan (RRP) reforms in Bulgaria, reported the Ministry of Justice.
At a meeting with Declan Costello and Johannes Luebking, Minister Georgiev presented a package of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code aimed at ensuring the effectiveness of criminal proceedings. It regulates victims’ rights to request the acceleration of criminal proceedings and allows for the possibility of splitting cases during the trial phase. These changes are in compliance with rulings of the European Court of Human Rights. The goal is to speed up investigations and prevent the termination of criminal cases due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. According to the Ministry of Justice, the European Commission expects the texts to be adopted as soon as possible.
