Bulgarian electricity exports guarantee the electricity balance in the Balkans

Bulgaria remains a net exporter of electricity and one of the pillars of the energy system in Southeast Europe. Electricity exports exceed imports by 3.1% in 2024. According to this indicator, the country ranks 11th in Europe. 

Among the Balkan countries, only Slovenia is ahead of Bulgaria with -19% and Montenegro with -5.6%. Romania, Albania, Serbia and North Macedonia are net importers. 

The largest exports are in Sweden with -27% and France with -22%.

In absolute terms, Bulgaria exports 987 GW. Only Slovenia is ahead of Bulgaria in this indicator among Balkan countries, exporting 2,406 GWh. Turkey and Greece export 985 GWh and 307 GWh, respectively. Romania imports 2,958 GWh, North Macedonia – 710 GWh, Serbia – 520 GWh, Albania – 334 GWh.

Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov announced that in 2025, electricity exports have increased by 60 percent compared to 2024, BGNES reports.
