European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen will visit Bulgaria on 28 October, just days after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft over Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine, BNR correspondent Angelina Piskova in Brussels reported.

Discussions could include the US sanctions on Lukoil, given that the company operates refineries in Bulgaria and Romania, the European Commission said. According to Politico, these refineries are the final hurdle to EU sanctions on the company, noting that Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia remain heavily reliant on Russian oil through the Lukoil network.

During his visit, Jørgensen will tour the Vertical Gas Corridor, a project designed to link the gas networks of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Moldova.
