The President of the National Assembly, Natalia Kiselova, is convening an extraordinary parliamentary sitting today with a single item on the agenda – a vote on amendments to the Medical Establishments Act, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.
The aim is to approve a pay rise for healthcare professionals, whereby doctors' basic salary will be set at 150% of the national average wage and nurses' and midwives' at 125%.
Last week, Kostadin Angelov, the chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Healthcare, announced that budgetary resources had been secured to meet 'the pay demands of young doctors'.
Healthcare workers have been protesting for months to demand fair remuneration for their work.
