Budget 2026 is being frozen, GERB are ready to rule with the old budget

GERB leader Boyko Borissov said that he did not like budget 2026 and it would be frozen. Speaking to the media in parliament, Borissov said that the Joint Governance Council of the formations in the government, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance will "find a legal way to withdraw the project after the first reading".

"Until the dialogue with the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation (state, trade unions and employers) is restored and until everyone sits down and agreement is reached, we will work with the old budget," Borissov said. The GERB leader recalled that "during the time of Finance Minister Assen Vassilev, the budget was not adopted until August, so there is nothing fatal".

Asked why he decided to take these actions regarding the budget right now, Borissov said that even if one person protests, he tries to hear what they want to say. Some of the demands are logical and reasonable, he added. "I have worked with dialogue for decades," he pointed out.

Regarding the possibility that the country would enter the eurozone without a budget, Borissov said that this did not matter at all because the budget for 2025 has a 3% deficit, as the European Commission wants.

The reaction of the ruling party comes after a big protest organised by the opposition in front of parliament last evening.
