Brexit no apocalypse for either Bulgaria or EU: Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov

"No apocalypse is in store for Bulgaria, and none is in store for the European Union either. The EU should be re-founded”, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said while interviewed by the Bulgarian National Television. He believes that EU leaders should act in cold blood though he admitted that after the United Kingdom EU referendum calm would not come so easily.

Europe experiences a deficit of leadership, Daniel Mitov said. He added that EU had to rethink and adapt to realities, and make conclusions that European leaders had avoided for decades. "When speaking about the super-bureaucratization of Europe and abolishing hindrances frustrating doing business for the sake of a more competitive economy, these are topics that European leaders have to consider very seriously”, he remarked.

"With Britain’s withdrawal Bulgaria loses a key ally on cardinal issues”, Mitov argued and pointed to the energy union and EU enlargement into the Western Balkans.

"It is obvious we have to build a clear and structured approach in negotiations for the Bulgarians in UK. We have assurances so far that their situation is not going to change. If anything changes it will concern people planning emigration to UK from now on”, the Bulgarian foreign minister explained. In his view Britain will suffer grave economic consequences from its withdrawal from EU.

Asked how Bulgaria’s withdrawal from EU sounds to him Daniel Mitov said he did not like the idea for such a step at all. He pointed out that so far this country had paid about 7 billion euro in contributions to the EU budget and has received more than 14 billion euro from structural funds plus 4 billion euro under agricultural programmes.
