Photo: Alexander Alexandrov

50,000 hectares of woodland have been reduced to ashes in the big fire blazing near Harmanli in southern Bulgaria; in the past two days the fire has spread to close to 5,000 hectares. The fire is under control though it has not been fully extinguished. Firefighters, the military as well as volunteers are still in place, ready to react if the situation takes a turn for the worse. There is no direct threat to the population but the emergency situation in Harmanli municipality is still in place. Another big conflagration, which destroyed hundreds of hectares of woodland near Miladinovo village near Svilengrad is now under control. A code red warning for risk of fires has been issued for six regions of the country: Dobrich, Varna, Bourgas, Yambol, Haskovo, Kurdjali.
