At a meeting in Sofia with EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said Bulgaria was prepared to assume the responsibilities of the presidency of the Council of the EU Council from the beginning of 2018 and to support the negotiating team in the process of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland leaving the European Union.
Borissov expressed hope that even after Brexit, the EU and the UK would remain partners in areas such as security and the fight against terrorism. The sides pointed out that it was important that the settlement of UK's financial obligations to the EU was based on the principle of fulfilling all commitments.
Prime Minister Borissov highlighted Michel Barnier's personal contribution to the effective preparation of the negotiations with London and expressed confidence that his team would achieve an optimal outcome for EU citizens.
