Protest in Sunny Beach against midnight anti-noise raids

Several hundred people came out to protest in the Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach against the raids by Deputy PM Valery Simeonov. The protesters, mostly people employed at beachside restaurants and bars, now temporarily closed, are worried they will lose clients and their jobs.  The owners are also planning a protest at the end of the week.

In the past few days Deputy Prime Minister Valery Simeonov has been organizing midnight raids in the resort targeted against excessive noise, together with police, officials from the National Revenue Agency, the Food Safety Agency etc. As a result, several discotheques and bars have been closed, sound equipment seized and one DJ was detained for 24 hours.

The raids split public opinion down the middle – from full approval to full-blown censure.
