Study shows serious plastic pollution of Black Sea

Photo: greenbalkans.org

Plastic pollution of the Bulgarian Black Sea is similar to that of the Baltic Sea and the Northwest Mediterranean - some of the world's most polluted water basins. This is what a scientific study of the pollution in the sea shows.

Authors of the study are scientists from the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The field study was conducted onboard the Rainbow Warrior vessel, together with Greenpeace activists in the period August 8 -10, 2017.

The data were obtained by collecting and categorizing samples and monitoring the water surface under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
