European Commission Vice-President of the EU Energy Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said in Sofia that because of its geographical location Bulgaria is the most suitable place to become a center of a gas hub for the region.
The country has a well-developed network of interconnectors with neighboring countries, starting with the interconnector between Bulgaria and Greece. There is a lot of progress in the construction of a Bulgaria-Turkey interconnector, more compressor stations are planned for the Bulgaria-Romania interconnector aimed to improve its effectiveness. A Bulgaria-Serbia interconnector is also being established with European assistance.
The goal of the EC is to turn Bulgaria from a gas-transiting country into a gas-trader country, Šefčovič said.
During his meetings with the Energy Commission and the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of the European Funds, Šefčovič said that Bulgaria was doing very well when it came to programs related to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
