Holy Synod of Bulgarian Orthodox Church discusses autocephaly of Ukraine’s Church

The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will decide today at an extraordinary meeting whether to support the proposal of the Russian Patriarch Kirill that a Universal Orthodox Council shuold discuss the controversies within the Orthodox Church. On October 11 the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I agreed to recognize the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate. Kyiv welcomed this move, but Russia condemned that act and called it catastrophic. On October 15 the Moscow Patriarchate decided to break ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church since 1686.
