The European Parliament has called for the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen area.

The resolution was approved by an overwhelming majority – 514 “for”, 107 “against” and 38 “abstained”. None of the speakers disputed the fact that the two countries fully meet the criteria for accession to the border-free Schengen area.

The final decision on whether Bulgaria and Romania can become part of the Schengen area has to be made through a unanimous vote in the Council by EU ministers. There are several countries which are still against.
