146 years since the death of national hero Vasil Levski will be marked across the country today with commemorative and flower-laying ceremonies.

His dream was of a “pure and sacred republic” in which all people would have equal rights, whatever their nationality or religion. He was hanged in Sofia on 18 February 1873 at the age of 35.
