Vasil Levski is known as the Apostle of Freedom because he organized a revolutionary network for the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination. His dream was of a “pure and sacred republic” in which all people would have equal rights, whatever their nationality or religion. He was hanged in Sofia on 18 February 1873 at the age of 35.
