146 years since death of national hero Vasil Levski commemorated nationwide

146 years since the death of national hero Vasil Levski will be marked across the country today with commemorative and flower-laying ceremonies.

Vice-President Iliana Yotova is to take part in the events in Levski’s home town Karlovo. A monument to Vasil Levski is to be inaugurated in Breznik with an official ceremony with the participation of the National Guards Unit.

Vasil Levski is known as the Apostle of Freedom because he organized a revolutionary network for the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman domination. He traveled extensively around the country and set up revolutionary committees to prepare the nation for a nationwide uprising. His dream was of a “pure and sacred republic” in which all people would have equal rights, whatever their nationality or religion. He was hanged in Sofia on 18 February 1873 at the age of 35.
