Bulgaria registers high road traffic death rate

Romania and Bulgaria have the highest death rate on the road in 2019. According to European Commission data, it was 96 per 1 million and 89 per 1 million of the population in the two countries. The average for the EU is 51 deaths per 1 million. 

A drop in road deaths was registered in Bulgaria - 19 % from 2010 until 2019, the average percentage for the EU being 23%. In the 2010-2017 period, road deaths dropped from 105 to 87 per 1 million, with a 3% rise in Bulgaria in 2019 compared to 2018. 

Sweden is the country with the lowest death rate of 22 per 1 million.  

Almost 7,000 people lost their lives on the road in Europe in 2019, and 120,000 were severely injured. 

Road safety problems have inflicted economic losses amounting to EUR 280 billion or 2% of the EU’s GDP.
