Bulgaria's President calls for new education policies

"Education must be a commitment of every government," said Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev at the opening of the school year in Bulgaria's smallest municipality, Treklyano.
Due to the depopulation, only 31 children study at the local school founded back in 1857, as half of the pupils live in a boarding house in Iztok Roma neighbourhood in the town of Kyustendil.
The presidency donated desks, teaching aids, computers for an e-classroom.
President Radev also talked to teachers and pupils and expressed admiration for the spirit of the teaching staff, which educates children from at-risk families and with socially disadvantaged parents.
"Education must be a strategic national priority - to have a new policy, not just school renovations and increased teachers' salaries," the head of state added. He called on enhanced state assistance and presence in small municipalities.
