In 2020, Bulgaria has allocated 1.93 percent of its GDP for defense, according to a NATO analysis. That's 150 USD per capita in the country. Most of these funds go for salaries - 56%. 18% goes to training and maintenance, 19.4% goes to new equipment and research, and 6.9% of the money is spent on infrastructure.

Due to the eight F16 aircraft purchased in 2019, the defense funds then reached 3.18 percent of GDP. In 2014, NATO countries adopted a goal for defense money to reach 2% of GDP by 2024. In 2020 Bulgaria almost meets this criterion, as 6 years ago it set aside for defense just 1.3% of national GDP.
