The population of Bulgaria amounts to 6,520,314 people, the National Statistical Institute announced. This country’s population has decreased by 844,000 people as compared to the previous census in 2011. This is the largest decrease ever recorded. More than half of the decline is due to the natural population decrease and the rest is due to migration.
In 1992, 24% of Bulgaria’s population was aged 14 or under and 14% was aged 65 and above. In 2021, 14% of the population is aged 14 and under and 24% of the people are aged 65 and above. Sofia-city is the only Bulgarian district with a natural population increase. Its population increased with 14.7%. The population in all other districts declined between 8% and 26%. The largest decline was reported in Vidin, Dobrich and Montana districts.
Only 34% of Bulgarians participated at the online census.
