Works on a new extension of the Sofia metro have started today. The construction of the 3-kilometre route will take 3 years and it will cost 109 million euros. The new section will carry 40,000 people a day. The subway with all its lines will carry 450,000 people a day.
It was not easy to secure the funds, said Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova. The funds for the construction of another new 6-km section with six metro stations were scrapped from the Recovery and Sustainability Plan. The state has pledged to provide EUR 20 million in 2022 to start work on this 6-kilometre section as well. However, construction will start with municipal funding, Fandakova said.
