Russia fears that the US will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine

European leaders are gathering at their last meeting of the year, where they will also discuss the development of the war in Ukraine. Despite Hungarian resistance, Brussels managed to push through the decision that in 2023 Ukraine would receive financial aid of 18 billion euros. The heads of state will discuss what help they can continue to provide to Kyiv in political, military and humanitarian aspects, as well as for the recovery of critical infrastructure after the massive Russian strikes.

US Patriot missile defense systems will be a legitimate target of Russian strikes against Ukraine if the US allows them to be delivered to Kyiv, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. "Patriot" is considered one of the most advanced American air defense systems against aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles. The Russian Embassy in Washington warned that the proposed delivery was a provocation and could have unpredictable consequences.

The Pentagon believes that one of the goals of the recent increase in Russian missile strikes in Ukraine is to deplete Kyiv's stockpile of air defenses so that Russia can dominate the skies above the country. For this reason, the US and its allies are supplying Kyiv with more such resources, reports REUTERS.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Washington has provided Ukraine with $19.3 billion in military aid.
