Nearly a quarter of Bulgarians live below the poverty line

In 2022, the total poverty line for Bulgaria is BGN 525.92 /EUR 268.43/ per household person per month on average. 1.572 million people, or 22.9% of the country's population, were below the poverty line, according to data from the National Statistical Institute.

According to calculations, if pension income is included in household income, but other social transfers (benefits, social and family insurance payments) are excluded, the poverty level rises from 22.9 to 30.3%.

The share of the poor among employed persons in the age group 18 - 64 years is 10%. Among the working poor, the share of those with higher education is the lowest - only 3.2%.
