EU Commissioner Gabriel gets mandate to form Bulgaria's new cabinet

I will do my best to have a stable and working government, she says

President Rumen Radev met Gabriel, who is European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, to give her the mandate. She will have seven days to see if she can get enough support to break Bulgaria's political deadlock.

President Rumen Radev handed the first exploratory mandate for forming a government to the candidate of the first political force GERB-SDS Maria Gabriel. "I expect that within a week you will present the structure and composition of the Council of Ministers, as is the constitutional requirement," the Head of State said.
For her part, Maria Gabriel assured that she would do her utmost to have a stable and functioning regular government within the 49th National Assembly. Her proposal is for an expert cabinet united around clear priorities with one goal - the well-being of the Bulgarians and the authority of our country.
"We will work for the reputation of Bulgaria in Europe and worldwide. We will unleash our country's potential. I will count on broad support on the important priorities for our country. United, we are able to do everything possible for our common home Bulgaria", Maria Gabriel underlined. On Sunday, Gabriel said she would propose a government with a one-year term.
The Head of State replied that there will be many obstacles on her way to forming a cabinet, adding that in a week's time she will be looking forward to a full mandate.
The first spin of the political roulette wheel for forming a regular government within the 49th National Assembly took place against the backdrop of a storm in the prosecutor's office and mutual accusations between Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev and his deputy Borislav Sarafov.
