At a national protest against the war on the roads, demonstrators in many cities and towns in Bulgaria demanded stricter sanctions for those driving at excessive speed and under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as effective punishments for those who caused serious accidents and increased control by the Ministry of the Interior.

In Sofia, the protest took place on the pedestrian crossing at Sllivnitsa Blvd, where a boy and a girl died after being hit by a car moving at high speed

"The protest will continue until we see real change from the responsible institutions," said one of its initiators, Georgi Todorov.

According to him, the changes to the Penal Code adopted in the first reading are not completely satisfactory. "Between the first and second reading, we expect amendments to fully introduce the institution of road homicide into the legislation, to criminalize driving at a speed exceeding the permitted speed by more than 50 km/h, and driving without a driver's license. There is also a lot of work to be done on the Road Traffic Act," added Todorov.
