Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Kiril Vatev has presented Bulgaria's problems with sunflower and milk powder to the EU Agriculture Council in Brussels. A good harvest is expected in Bulgaria, but due to the cheap import of sunflower and oil from Ukraine in 2022, there are 700,000 tonnes of old sunflower in stock.

A new increase in Ukrainian imports is expected, Vatev warned, if the capacities in Bulgaria and neighboring countries are unable to process the significantly increased quantities. Vatev emphasized that this year we have the most expensive harvest in Europe and logistics have been totally changed since the war in Ukraine.

He asked to improve the transit of Ukrainian grain along the "corridors for solidarity" and protection for Bulgarian producers.

The increased import of milk powder is dumping prices and putting Bulgarian livestock breeders at risk, in parallel with the increase in feed prices, Vatev said and requested additional state aid for the sector.
