The mayors of the municipalities of Velingrad, Sarnitsa and Rakitovo have strongly opposed the investment intention of a company from Plovdiv planning to mine tungsten in near Velingrad. At a joint press conference, the mayors pointed out that mining would endanger the health of the residents of several municipalities in the area, especially since the area is also a water supply area for several villages.

The press conference was also attended by MP Vasil Todev, who pointed out that the future of the Western Rhodopes was not mining, but tourism and organic agriculture.
