Miners in Bulgaria will protest to preserve coal mining

Miners and energy workers will come out for a national protest today for the preservation of coal mining and against the premature closure of capacities in the coal mining sector. The protest is organized by the two largest trade unions in Bulgaria - CITUB and Podkrepa Trade Union.

According to CITUB, the scenarios for the accelerated phasing-out of coal plants by 2030 have not been agreed with the unions and are therefore completely unacceptable to them. From there they also note that the rapid shutdown of coal power will lead to high risks for the security of supply and a high social cost.
In the three coal regions of the country - Stara Zagora, Pernik and Kyustendil, 20,000 jobs are directly at risk, and more than 80,000 people will be indirectly affected.
