The church must remain open, said Bulgaria's Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov regarding the case of the Russian church of Saint Nikolay Mirlikiyski (Nicholas of Myra) in Sofia which was closed by the Russian embassy.

"The expelled Russian priests are foreign citizens who worked against the interests of Bulgaria. I read the National Security Agency report. There are enough reasons for these people to be outside Bulgaria", said the Prime Minister. "I had a meeting with representatives of the Holy Synod, I said that we will provide everything that is needed by the state. But we cannot interfere directly in the process", commented Denkov.

The Prime Minister announced that on October 4 he will talk to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and inform him about what Vienna loses from Bulgaria and Romania not being in Schengen and how much they will gain if they are in the free movement zone.
