The region of Stara Zagora is affected most by the transition to a climate-neutral economy, as the four coal-fired thermal power plants and mines are located on its territory. This is stated in the definitive territorial just transition plans for the regions of Stara Zagora, Pernik and Kyustendil which the government published.

Miners and energy workers have been blocking road arteries for a fourth day in protest against the plans for a just transition for the coal-mining regions. Meanwhile, protesters broke through the police cordon and spilled onto Struma motorway; employees of Toplofikatsia-Sliven district heating company are beginning a protest in support of their colleagues from Maritsa Iztok.
