Bulgaria marks World AIDS Day with a number of initiatives. World AIDS Day has been held since 1988 on the initiative of the World Health Organization. It aims to raise awareness of the Aids pandemic caused by the HIV infection and adress the HIV-related stigma.

228 new HIV-positive persons have been registered in Bulgaria since the beginning of 2023. From 1986 until November 24, 2023, a total of 4,276 people with HIV infection have been registered in the country. The number of newly registered infections is several fold higher among men than women, a tendency that has prevailed over the years. 90.8% of all new cases are the result of a sexual contact. The majority of the new HIV infections are predominantly in big cities- Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, the Regional Health Inspectorate-Kyustendil announced.
