17% of babies and young children in Bulgaria live in poverty

Photo: Archive

Seventeen per cent of children aged 0-5 in the country live in poverty, according to National Statistical Institute data. The infant mortality rate remains almost double the EU average of 3.6%. The indicators are most worrying in areas with compact ethnic minority and marginalised communities.

At the closing event of the 'Advocacy for children aged 0-3 living in poverty' project, it was highlighted that the main threats to the youngest children are unhealthy environment and nutrition, insecurity, violence, poor education and the ill health of parents. Furthermore, the country lacks laws, regulations and policy documents that prioritise early childhood development.

The project was implemented by the NGO Club and 10 NGOs working throughout the country.
