The former striker of Manchester United, Tottenham and the Bulgarian national team, Dimitar Berbatov, has announced that he will run for president of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) and will appear at an extraordinary congress on March 15.

"I hope that the Congress will be held honestly, transparently," said Berbatov. He called on the other candidates to present their programs and teams, together to hold a preliminary meeting with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Sports, and "to fight together for the holding of a transparent congress".

He insisted that the leadership of the Bulgarian Football Union should be up to 3 terms or 12 years in total, which is enough for a chairman to show what he can do.

The last Congress of the BFU, in which Berbatov appeared and lost to Borislav Mihaylov, was held in October 2021. Mihaylov was at the top of Bulgarian football for 18 years.
