The 146th anniversary of the liberation of Sofia from Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 was celebrated with a procession in the centre of the city. It started from the St. Nedelya Cathedral and ended in front of the Monument to the Bulgarian Volunteers in the Russo-Turkish War, BTA reported. It was organised by Bulgarian Russophile organisations.

On this day 146 years ago, units of the Western Detachment of the Russian Army under the command of General Gurko entered the future capital of Bulgaria. The Battle of Sofia was of great strategic importance for the further advance of the Russian troops in Thrace, as the city was a major supplier of food and ammunition to the Turkish army, the Sofia Municipality recalled.

To mark the anniversary, a re-enactment of the historical events will be held in the capital's North Park on January 6 at 1 pm, the municipality said.
