Representatives of the Bulgarian Chess Federation 2022 licensed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Bulgarian Chess Federation accepted as a member of the International FIDE and the European Chess Union met at the initiative of the Minister of Sports Dimitar Iliev in an attempt to find a way to their union.

"The biggest unifying line is that our chess players have the chance to participate in both national and international championships," Iliev said.

At the meeting, options for unification under the umbrella of one and the other federation were discussed, as well as the creation of a completely new federation, which would put an end to the 7-year division in Bulgarian chess.

At this stage, however, the ruts of division proved too deep to be overcome.
