Bulgarian Orthodox Church pays homage to all saints

Photo: Archive

On today's day the Bulgaria Orthodox Church pays tribute to the historical personalities who have lived in Bulgarian lands since the 1st century and canonized as saints. All of them were people of faith and spirit and by their deeds strengthened the bond between the Church, people and the state.

The New Martyrs who suffered for the faith during the Ottoman times are celebrated, such as Euthymius of Tarnovo, Kozma and Pimen of Zograf, Paisii of Hilendar, Sofroniy of Vratsa, the New Martyrs of Sofia, Nicholas and three with the name of Georgi, the Gabrovo Martyrs - Damaskin, Lazar, Onufriy and others.

In addition to the saints marked in the Church calendar, in Bulgarian lands there were many hermits and martyrs, so the Church also commemorates those unknown holy people who shed their blood for the preservation of the faith. This day is also for the glorification of those unknown ascetics and monks who have gone quietly from this world.
