The major repair works on the Danube bridge near Ruse, which will begin on 10 July, will be carried out without stopping traffic and without closing the facility, the Road Infrastructure Agency said, refuting false information published in the Romanian media. The works will be carried out every day for 10-12 hours, during daylight hours. Vehicles will travel in both directions on the lane that is not currently being repaired.
The estimated duration of the repairs is approximately 4.5 months per lane. An adaptive traffic light system will manage the traffic.
The total length of the Bridge of Friendship is 2,223 m. On the Bulgarian side, the Danube Bridge spans 1,057 m. No major repairs have been carried out since it was opened 70 years ago. The technical project for the repair of the facility provides for a complete replacement of the asphalt layers, panels, waterproofing, new road safety systems, markings, etc.
The Romanian authorities have been informed of the forthcoming rehabilitation through a series of meetings and letters.
