The Bulgarian Orthodox church marks the assumption of St. Anna – the saint who gave birth to Maria, the future mother of Jesus Christ.
St. Anna is considered to be the patron saint of marriage, of family and motherhood, as well as protector of virgins, widows and pregnant women. On this day the icon of St. Anna is decorated with flowers, and gifts are placed in front of it. Today people named Anna, Yana, Encho celebrate their name day. The church honours St. Anna on one more day during the year – 9 December – as the day of conception by St. Anna of the Holy Mother of God.
